After the deluge
Myself and many others have been following the ongoing efforts to recover from the flash floods that hit Southern Alberta and Saskatchewan last year. In response to the Alberta government’s perceived lack of timely response, the residents of the flood-stricken town of Irvine have also become more than a little vocal, forming a local community association and assigning a spokesperson to ensure the government hears their concerns. Chief among them; fears of repeat flooding due to the melting of record snow pack, a lack of flood preparedness and flood hazard mapping. They’re also just generally annoyed that nobody cleaned the massive debris that collected in the floodpath in June, creating a tempting habitat for beavers and their dams, which, I’ve been told, are now rampant in certain areas around Irvine.
Nobody has any idea how this year’s spring melt is going to play out. But if things get much worse, I’ll have to reassemble my Get-My-Ass-Out-To-Medicine-Hat flood kit again. (Best Western, represent.)
Anyway, this year the government is making an effort. They’re issuing evacuation alerts, holding press conferences and providing sandbags and dams. Stelmach is actually talking about it instead of going to Portugal. Gold stars and extra apple juice for everyone.
Today, they also announced a $1 million grant to purchase dams, berms and sandbags etc. They’re also going to fund a flood hazard mapping study.
Of course, that’s a fraction of what Saskatchewan (aka, that poor province to the right) announced about a month ago ($22 million). They were also in the process of completing their mapping study when I spoke to the Saskatchewan Watershed Authority in February.
TIA.
